Henrico Career and Technical Education (CTE) is on a mission to prepare students for what's next, whether that's college, the military, or a career. We're focused on the 3 E's: for every Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) student to be enrolled, enlisted, and/or employed.

Developing a Path for Every Student

CTE programs are designed to help students discover who they are, what they're passionate about, and what they're good at. Our focus is on building the skills that matter most for a successful future:

  • Academic Skills: Strengthening core knowledge.
  • Technical Skills: Gaining hands-on expertise in a specific field.
  • Work-Readiness Skills: Learning to work both independently and with a team, solve problems creatively, and use technology effectively.

Students who complete our programs are ready to transition to higher education or the workforce. Many of our courses offer opportunities to earn college credits and prepare for industry certifications and professional licenses.

Our Reach

We serve students and adults across the county, with programs and services available at:

  • 12 middle schools
  • 9 high schools
  • 3 Advanced Career Education Centers
  • Multiple high school specialty centers
  • 2 adult education centers
  • The Academy at Virginia Randolph

The department, with help from our business partners, continuously monitors and evaluates our programs to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our students. We also offer comprehensive adult education that helps individuals improve their foundational skills in reading, writing, and math, earn a high school diploma, GED, and strengthen their job skills.

Creating a Life-Ready Generation

We believe that today's career paths are no longer a straight line from high school to college and into a single, long-term job. There are multiple, rewarding paths available, and the HCPS Department of Workforce and Career Development is committed to giving students the credentials and life-ready experiences they need to take ownership of their future.

Workforce and Career Development prepares students to become more motivated, self-directed learners by understanding the relationship among academics, career and education planning and achieving their own career goals. Through career development, students discover who they are, what they like to do and what they do best.

Today's typical career paths do not necessarily follow the traditional course of high school, college and long-term employment. Today, there are multiple paths to rewarding careers. Our focus is on the "3E's" — for all HCPS students to be enrolled, enlisted and/or employed. The HCPS Department of Workforce and Career Development equips students with credentials and life-ready experiences so they can take ownership in navigating their own career paths.
